Tips for Giving a Great Speech
If you’ve been asked to give a speech, then you want to make sure you’re well prepared. For our team, even when they’re just presenting on the quarter’s goals to a group of Essential Management Group leaders, they still apply these same tips as if they were giving a major keynote address:
- Focus on One Point: For most talks, it’s important to have one clear point with which your audience can walk away. They may not remember every detail of everything you said, so you want to make sure you know what main detail people should take away from the talk and highlight that.
- Spark Curiosity: Sometimes, our leaders share provocative questions before their talks to Essential Management Group to encourage people to think through the issues beforehand and become curious as to how the speaker will answer the questions later.
- Avoid Jargon: Unless your audience is highly technical, avoid using industry jargon to describe your topic. Instead, simplify what you’re saying and think of how you can use metaphors and illustrations to make the same point.
A great talk can really change how people view and approach an issue or give insight into company strategies they hadn’t considered. If you’re speaking, take the time to prepare to ensure that your talk is remembered by all.
